Steakhouse Beef Jerky – Chile Limon

July 27th, 2009

IMG_2127I am a sucker for beef jerky…what can I say?

I can’t help but to stop and look at any rack or shelf merchandising beef jerky products.  I’m usually looking for brands I have never seen before (or at the very least have not experienced) or flavors that are unique and/or interesting.  I am sure you have noticed that everyone has “original”, a “teriyaki”, and a “spicy” or “hot” versions.  But it’s the flavors that are less common that interest me.

Walking through the aisles of Walgreens I stumbled upon Chile Limon Beef Jerky by Steakhouse.  That’s definately not a flavor you run into very often.  Chalk up an easy sale for Walgreens.

This Steakhouse jerky is a brand made for Walgreens and was priced at $2.99 for a 2.75 ounce bag.  Thats about as inexpensive as beef jerky gets at $1.00ish/ounce.  There are a few things that stick out to me on the packaging:

  • Hand Chunked and Formed – This is not a whole muscle product but it is a step up from Chopped and Formed jerky products (quality-wise).
  • Packaged In The USA – Generally this means the product was made outside of the U.S. and brought in to be packaged within the U.S.
  • Limited Edition stamp – probably referring to the unique flavor.

The unique smell hit me as soon as I opened up the bag…and the jerky has a redder-than-usual appearance.  As far as the taste…what do YOU think?!

      • I'd surely spend a few more dollars and get something "better" quality. I know price-point means a lot when trying to determine something's overall value, but the cheap cost of production is very evident. Thats probably why the package emphasized "packaged in" and not "made in" in the good ole USA.

      • Initial reaction was that the jerky tasted like some sort of household cleaning product mixed with Albertsons discount beef section or something. I'd expect lower than average quality jerky from stuff thats sold at Walgreens and all, but this stuff is a step below my expectations unfortunately. The spiciness is there, but everything else is lacking in my opinion. Perhaps another flavor by the same company will yield a better taste.

      • Not good, hence the 1 star. Sorry Steakhouse.

      • Very stick to the touch. Leaves a filmy residue on your hands or in my case the notebook I set it down on. I like the texture and slize size, but nothing else about this jerky is doing anything for me. :(

      • It's not that bad if you like meat seasoned with lime. But the quality and texture are average at best. The low price keeps me from just giving it 2 stars.

      • The price is right on this...I'll never complain about a $3 bag. It has a unique flavor that is decent. The texture and overall quality leaves quite a bit to be desired by me. Although the price is good...I probably will not be buying this kind again.

      • The taste is very unique and has an easily identifiable lime taste to it with a second most identifiable taste being the chile. The name is right on. There is a slight kick to it here and there...but definately not spicy overall.

      • I think there are alot of additives to this product that make it a far cry from natural. And the quality of the meat really doesn't do this jerky any favors. Admittedly, I am not a fan of the 'chunked and formed' type of jerky.

      • The overall consistency is...for a lack of a better term...weird. The process of chunking and forming gives this jerky a texture that I am not fond of. It doesn't rip and tear like whole muscle jerky...so it definately chews like a processed meat product.
